Big George is a wonderful tale of friendship and understanding set amidst a fantastical medieval background full of plots and high excitement.
This is the story of the first visitor to England from Outer Space. The year is 1103. England is a land of darkness and wilderness, and her people believe in fairies, dragons, and the possibility of magic.
Into this land with a loud, thundering crash falls a Stranger. He lands in the middle of a forest during the night. The Stranger is a lot like the people of Earth, only taller -- much, much taller, with blue and green hair, and a face so pale it glows like a distant star. As can be expected when one lands with such a bang, there are a few bumps and bruises, and the memory of where he came from and why he was sent are bumped right out of his head.
As the Stranger wanders out of the forest, he is first spotted by a frightened poacher, Simpkin Sampkins, who runs to spread the word. Luckily, he next encounters Tilly, the Miller's daughter. She is kind and pretty, and happy to make a new friend. Tilly exclaims, "By George," when she first spies this huge being, and the name sticks. Even though Tilly and George speak different languages, they understand each other very well and become fast friends.
And so the adventure begins. Tilly and George must defend themselves and each other from many foes. First there is the greedy Miller, with his selfish plot to sell Tilly to be wed to the gruesome Bones Lousewort, son of the local Baron. Then there are the simple villagers, scared of something so strange (and so big), who attack George because of their fears. There is evil Baron Lousewort and his two nasty cronies, Silas Sludge and Bartholomew Bog, who have a devious plan to kill George. And though they don't know it, Tilly and George are up against time itself, as George's internal clock gets set to send him to sleep for nine hundred years.
Big George is a hit with the grade 3s each year!

Because of Mr. Terupt
![Picture](/uploads/2/5/8/0/25806471/4204773.jpg)
It is the beginning of fifth grade, and Mr. Terupt is a brand new teacher. He has his hands full with seven distinctive voices in his class: Jessica is the smart, new girl who isn't quite fitting in. Luke is the brain. Anna has a home life she's embarrassed about, and just wants to disappear. Peter is the class clown, who can't seem to sit down and focus. Lexie is a bully who feels that the best defense is a good offense. Jeffery just hates school, and nobody really knows why. Overweight Danielle can't ever seem to stand up for herself. Only Mr. Terupt seems able to reach his students, and things are beginning to look up for each of them until a fateful winter day where an accident occurs that will change everything and everyone.
Because of Mr. Terupt is a lovely and inspirational story. Each of the children in the story takes a turn narrating, which gives the reader insight into their particular situation, even though the characters may not understand each other. One girl is the daughter of a teenaged mother, who is still ostracized by a family that has strict religious beliefs. Another boy lost a brother with special needs, and his family is still grieving. The girl who bullies has a mother who has warned her not to let others take advantage of her. Mr. Terupt has an uncanny ability to understand his student's motivations and is just beginning to make progress with each of them when he is injured in an accident his students each feel responsible for. He spends several months in a coma, during which time the students must forge on without his guidance. They experience a great deal of anxiety visiting their teacher in the hospital when he has brain surgery. One of the best experiences Mr. Terupt's kids have is their surprisingly rewarding interaction with the special needs class in their school. Each student is ultimately able to conquer an important personal demon and recognize the lessons imparted to them. An important over-riding message in this book is that of personal responsibility. Most every reader will find at least one character that they identify with in this book.

Do you have questions, comments, or concerns?
I try to touch base with each parent throughout the year; however, there are times when things arise that you may want to contact me about. Feel free to leave a note in your child's agenda, call the school at (780) 542-5535, or you can email me at the button below. I will do my best to respond as promptly as possible, but do ask for your patience as I may be busy preparing lessons or helping your child or another student at the time. It is always best to talk about things early when we can approach things in a positive and proactive manner!
