Every day after lunch we have D.E.A.R. Time where we Drop Everything And Read. We have the privilege of sitting anywhere we would like! Reading is very important in Grade 3 and we are working on building our reading stamina during D.E.A.R. Time. We have been reading for approximately 15-20 minutes so far and our goal is 30 minutes. Way to go 3K!
Who is this Mrs. Kelln and why is she posting here?Even though I am on my maternity leave until the end of October and loving on my precious littles, I can't help but be excited about our class this year! I've been in through the summer and school start up and am working with Miss Shykora to try to make our classroom the best it can be this year. I am SO grateful to Miss Shykora for allowing me to be her partner even while on my maternity leave. Together we are working to create a classroom that will see minimal hiccups when I transition back. Miss Shykora has allowed me to come in and update, paint and create the physical space over the summer so that the kids didn't have a big change in October. She also agreed to follow the same schedule as I would and is implementing many of my routines and practices into the daily life of our classroom. Meanwhile, she is putting in a lot of hard work every day with lots of her special touches to make our classroom a true community. We are doing all of this teamwork to ensure the students have the smoothest possible transition when she leaves and I return. We are so very lucky to have such a flexible and dedicated teacher in Miss Shykora working to keep everything running smoothly. Be sure to thank her if you get a chance- she's one great teacher! Here are some of the process photos of getting the room ready this year. I was able to come in (even my three kids joined me!) and pull down all the old bulletin boards, paint, and put up new ones. I also created a new mailbox system for the kids this year. I thank my ever talented husband for cutting pieces of 3" pvc pipe into 39 (yes 39!) smaller pieces. Then he de-burred each one and sanded them one by one by hand to make sure no one caught any rough edges. I then washed, assembled and glued them all together and labeled them for the kids before bringing it in to our class.
If you've been in our room, you'll see many characters from Finding Dory on our bulletin boards. My three year old was very sad that they were going into our classroom and not into HIS bedroom! Oh well, I think they look great on the new blue boards. But he did help cut them out with me and made sure to tell me to "Stay on the line, Maman!" See? School really is a team effort for everyone! Today we were introduced to a book entitled "The Best of Me", written by Wendy Ewald. Wendy is a photographer who visited elementary schools posing the following question to the students: "What is the best part of you?" The result of her conversations were compiled in her book and the students each had their "best part" photographed and then wrote an accompanying poem. We participated in some brain-storming today and had our "Best of Me" photo sessions. Throughout the week we will be composing the written portion of our project. Once we have "The Best of Me" written portion, we will be displaying our finished projects, along with our photos, on our bulletin board outside our room.
Thank you to Rylee, Ava, Nixon, Zac and Cole for posting on our blog! I will award you with your Dojo Points tomorrow morning. Today we had the chance to get to know a little bit more about our classmates by playing the M&M's game. We shared a little bit about ourselves, depending on what colour we pulled out of the bag. A love of pizza, animals, reading and gaming was widespread throughout our class.
We had an opportunity to earn some Class Dojo points today for pushing our chairs in before lining up quickly and quietly, shortest to tallest as a pack of Silent Coyotes. Ask us to show you what our signal is for a Silent Coyote! Our room was incredibly tidy at the end of the day because we worked as a team, while earning a few more Dojo points. We are all working on a tiny bit of homework over the long weekend in order to discover even more things we have in common with eachother. Our challenge is to fill a "Me Bag", a grocery bag with 3-5 'tokens' that are important to us. We do ask that these items are able to fit in a grocery bag, as we have limited space. For example, if you have a puppy that you love or a fabulous sports trophy, please take a picture of the item and place the picture in your grocery bag. Every day we will try and guess which person belongs to each "Me Bag". Wishing everyone a safe and fun Labour Day weekend! I was really excited to meet our Grade 3 students today! We have a great group this year and we are looking forward to being safe, learning and having fun! We put first thing first and organized all of our school supplies. While we organized our supplies we learned a few number and words in Danish.
We read a book called "First Day Jitters" about a teacher on her first day at her new school. We discussed our first day feelings, which ranged from nervous, to scared, to happy, to excited, a few in between and one student for all of the emotions. Next, we graphed them on a chart and discovered that four of us were nervous, three were scared, two were in between scared and happy, one of us was all four emotions, six of us were happy, one was in between happy and excited and nine were excited! We had a chance to get outside and enjoy the big playground and swings! At our assembly we were introduced to our entire team at Evergreen Elementary and we are all looking forward to a fantastic year! Comment on our blog and our students will have the opportunity to earn some Class Dojo points! |
