My day started very sweetly with a beautiful flower hand-grown by one of my students. Thank you Logan, that was such a sweet gesture!
After singing our national anthem, we refreshed where things could be found in our room with a class scavenger hunt. We then set about planning our Skype session with our partner grade 3 class in Pikeville, Kentucky. We will be connecting with these guys regularly to complete a novel study, practice our math skills, and generally expand our horizons. We also hope to connect with other people from all over the world! If you have friends or family that live in another country and would be willing to Skype with our class please let Mrs. Kelln know! In our quest to be global citizens, it helps to meet people of the world!
Back to our Skype session! We planned out some questions about things we would like to know about our new friends as well as prepared an animal for a mystery Skype game. Each class had an animal in mind and questions were asked until it was guessed!

Next, we were onto science and writing down all the things we knew about rocks and all the things we wanted to learn about rocks. Students said they knew rocks came in all shapes and sizes, were hard, took a long time to make, and sometimes had things inside them. They wanted to learn about where they come from, what colors they are and other interesting facts. We finished off by watching a quick 5 minute video introducing us to some rock concepts we will be learning.
The weather was beautiful and we took advantage of the warmth and sunshine as next week looks chilly (be sure to bring warm coats for recess!). We grouped up with the other class and had some free time to run and play.
Inside we wrote our agenda message and tidied up before we went on our rock hunt! We are very lucky to have access to a treasure trove of rocks on land just adjacent to the Meraw Estates development owned by Mr. Blais. Students enjoyed combing through the rocks to find just the perfect one. The were asked to take their rocks home, polish them up (give them a bit of a clean), and then bring ONE or TWO back to school on Monday to create a class rock collection.
Just as we were preparing to walk back, Mr. Blais arrived with a cool treat for all 60 of us!!! Thank you Mr. Blais for your kindness and generosity year after year!
Such a fun-filled and exciting week 1. I'm so excited for the rest of this year! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
