What We Did This Week

Our guys, Riley and Rick, had a chance to go celebrate their reading success with their Drayton Valley Thunder Player Mentors last week. Way to go guys. Click on the picture to see the full article in the Western Review newspaper!
Important Info First! Report Cards went home in the portfolio today along with the following information about student led conferences. Please check your child's time and plan to attend! The kids are learning neat games to help demonstrate their knowledge to you! Please be sure to bring or send the portfolio back with your child by Thursday morning so we can start filling it with stuff for next term! What We Did This Week!
Our blog visits seem to be dropping by the wayside (only 9 last week, and 8 the week before) so I've decided to scale back a bit and see if having one post summarizing our week will spark some new interest and will let the important parts shine. I will continue to take pictures daily of the fun stuff we do and then put it all together with the highlights from our week. Feedback is always accepted and appreciated. I want this blog to be useful - what ever that is for you - so let me know! Thanks everyone!
The grade 3s had a surprise today when they received penpal letters from a school in Edmonton. Every year I pair with another teacher in Londonderry Junior High School to send letters back and forth. It serves many purposes; her grade 7 students have to learn to write friendly letters so we make a good audience. The grade 3s have to become better writers and it's nice to practice our writing in a way other always writing a story. Thirdly, it neat to connect with other people and send and receive answers to questions. Finally, it is just a lot of fun to get mail, right?
What We Did Today
Students showed great respect and honor at our Remembrance Day Ceremony this morning. After helping each other put our poppies over our hearts, students made their way to the gym for the service. Below you will see some small clips of our annual tribute to those who have served our country and those who continue to serve. We will remember. After our ceremony, students returned to the class to complete a non-fiction reading comprehension activity about camels and their humps! Did you know that it is a myth that camels store water in their humps? It is really a storage of fatty tissue to help the camel go up to 2 weeks without food. I'm sure this comes in very handy in the desert! Did you know that the camel can drink up to 100 L of water at one time? Pretty cool! Did you know that camels can close their nostrils? Check out our pictures below of students who wanted to try the same thing! After burning off some energy at recess, it was back to the gym for an Earth Rangers presentation. They brought some very interesting animals including an armadillo, a very large lizard, and some birds too! Check out their website HERE for more information. And see the video below to see one of the visitors soaring over our heads! Once the presentation was over, we returned to class and completed our spelling test. We have some great spellers in our room! After another lunch and recess we had DEAR and music, and then it was time to head home for our 4 day weekend. Please remember to take time on Tuesday to pause and reflect. Have a wonderful weekend. Reminders Lots of things went home today. Make sure you received it all!

Reminder
With the weather getting colder, please ensure your grade 3 student comes to school with more than just a sweater. As we live in Alberta, we still brave the colder weather and some without coats may not be able to take full advantage of recess or other outside activities once the thermometer drops. Thank you! Tomorrow at 9:00am is our Remembrance Day ceremonies here at school. We encourage students to wear red and black to show our support. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve our country here and abroad. What We Did Today!
Mrs. Payne is away at a conference yesterday and today along with several others. We had the pleasure of having Mrs. Howes in our room yesterday and today we just had us. It was so busy, Mrs. Kelln forgot to take lots of pictures. But don't worry, we were doing stuff! Since we've been so heavy in the LA and Math lately, we took time to focus on Science and Social today. It was a very neat change up! What We Did Today
QUESTION
We continue to connect with people around the globe via Skype. We would love to talk with people (near or far) who have visited one of the four countries we study this year. Have you, or anyone you know, visited Peru, Tunisa, Ukraine, or India and would be willing to share your/their experience with us? If so, please speak to Mrs. Kelln! It helps us to make the world a little smaller for our students! |
